During my time as a Prison Officer with HMPPS, I earned a Level 3 Diploma in the Management and Care of Individuals in the Custodial Environment. This role provided me the opportunity to support and empower vulnerable individuals within a custodial setting. Drawing upon my background in expressive arts, I was able to overcome challenges and use my skills to foster positive change.
The role of a prison officer is dynamic and fast-paced, with a diverse range of responsibilities. From ensuring the security of the facility to aiding inmates in their rehabilitation and skill-building efforts, each day presents its own set of challenges. While there are rewarding moments, the role also demands resilience and the ability to handle difficult behaviours. However, with comprehensive training and a strong support system, I felt empowered to confidently navigate these challenges and make a positive impact on the lives of those around me.
One of the highlights of my tenure was my active involvement in the diversity and inclusion department. I took part in creating event materials and organizing various initiatives, which allowed me to rediscover my talents and experience fulfilment in ways I hadn’t anticipated. Throughout my career, I’ve developed strong problem-solving abilities, as well as exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills. I have consistently demonstrated an ability to investigate complex issues, quickly grasp new concepts, and devise innovative solutions.
After having my daughter, I decided to transition from being a Prison Officer to a Digital and Technology Solutions apprentice. I sought a career that offered more flexibility and a better work-life balance, allowing me to spend quality time with her and build a meaningful bond as she grows.
While I truly enjoyed my time at HMPPS and experienced significant personal growth, the need for flexibility became a priority. I was fortunate to work alongside incredible staff and inmates, forming connections that enriched my experience. My varied shifts—whether at night, during the evening, or lunch breaks—allowed me time for reflection and personal growth, such as reading. This helped me expand intellectually and manage my finances more effectively, as I was able to save during my time in the service.
